Attach significance letters to data bars in chart

I have a bar chart on which I would like to attach statistical significant letters onto each bar in the chart.  Currently, I am inserting text boxes above each bar and typing in the letter, but this is time consuming and tedious and hard to get the letters
lined up exactly right.
Is there a way to attach these letters to the bars in Excel before copying chart into Word?
